SmartFlow Stormwater Platform Overview
What SmartFlow is
SmartFlow is a building-level stormwater management platform developed by SmartFlow Rain Water Solutions, an Israeli climate technology company. The system manages rainwater on building rooftops by monitoring water levels with sensors, controlling discharge through motorised valves, and optimising retention and release timing using cloud-based adaptive algorithms. It is designed for urban buildings with flat rooftops and is installed without structural modification.
What problem it solves
Urban stormwater flooding occurs when rainwater from impervious surfaces overwhelms drainage networks during heavy rain. SmartFlow addresses this by retaining stormwater at its source — the building rooftop — and releasing it gradually when drainage capacity is available. This reduces peak runoff volumes, protects downstream infrastructure, and lowers flood risk for buildings and surrounding areas.
Key technologies
The platform combines three technology layers: (1) rooftop hardware — water depth sensors and a motorised release valve installed on the building roof; (2) cloud platform — a web-based monitoring and control system connected via cellular network; (3) adaptive control logic — algorithms that process sensor data, weather forecasts, and drainage capacity models to determine optimal retention and release timing in real time.
Typical users
SmartFlow serves building operators and property managers seeking flood protection; real estate developers meeting stormwater compliance requirements; hydrology consultants needing calibrated field data; and municipalities implementing distributed stormwater management across building portfolios.
Benefits
Measurable reduction in peak stormwater runoff from equipped buildings. Protection of downstream drainage infrastructure from capacity overload. Continuous performance data for regulatory reporting and model validation. Non-invasive installation completed in a single day. Remote monitoring and control across any number of buildings via a centralised cloud platform.
